Sea Journal - Vol. 6

Introduction

Working on the edge of an island at the bottom of the planet, it could be easy to feel a little isolated.

That's because of all the advantages that come from being based in Tasmania (pristine ocean, clean air, epic wilderness) feeling connected to the rest of the world isn't typically one.

And yet, we do, because our solutions are spreading around the planet.

While Sea Forest continues to make progress at home, we've been stoked by some big developments in Europe recently, where we started working with some exciting partners, met some new friends who opened doors to fresh opportunities, and expanded our potential to make big change.

From Tassie to Trafalgar, good things are happening.

Thanks for reading.

British Invasion

We're positively chuffed to announce our exclusive partnership with Morrisons, the 125-year-old chain of supermarkets in the UK, helping them fast track lower carbon beef products in their stores. Working with Morrisons manufacturing arm, we'll be supplying SeaFeed™ to help speed up the introduction of lower carbon products like mince, burgers and steaks in Morrisons 500 supermarkets and 1,600 convenience stores. “As British farming's biggest direct customer, we're well placed to support the farmers we work with and help them farm more sustainably," said Sophie Throup, Technical and Sustainability Director for Morrisons manufacturing arm. Eurovision

A recent trade mission to Europe has been worth the days spent crumpled in airline seats and transit lounges. First, we attended the Seaweed Showcase in Wales, where Prince William hosted and spent time chatting about Sea Forest's progress in the UK. Then we shifted into networking overdrive at Founders Forum, a global community and group of businesses, where we rubbed elbows with some of the biggest and most progressive companies shaping the future. We also reconnected with our buddies from the EarthShot Prize during London Climate Action Week, which brought new opportunities. Meaningful impact on an international scale, here we come!

An Unreasonable Start

Remember when we got picked as one of 14 purpose-led ventures to join Unreasonable Food 2024, the billion-dollar sustainability program created by Mars and Unreasonable Group? Well, last month, they hosted their inaugural annual gathering with the team from Mars, and the participating businesses, and it was pretty inspirational. Our CEO Sam said: "This was one of the best gathering we’ve been involved in. It was so impactful for Sea Forest and I’m confident over the months ahead we can expect to see some positive and tangible outcomes." The aim of the program is to help Mars reduce their emissions by 50% and beyond. Read more.

Great Danes

Denmark is poised to become the first country to tax farms for greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. Here's a quick explainer: What's the proposal? A carbon tax of 300 kroner (AUD$64) per ton of carbon equivalent starting in 2030, which will increase to 750 kroner (AUD$161) by 2035. Why? So Denmark can cut emissions by 70% in 2030. Because livestock generate around 15% of total global emissions and in the short-term methane (the gas they burp) is 80 times more effective at trapping heat than carbon. How will the revenue be used? Money collected will go back to farms to help them transition to greener practises. Read more.

Beyond The Sea...

Living in The Information Age, everyone needs that friend who sorts the digital wheat from the social media chaff, and turns you onto books, websites, music, and videos that better your life. Not in a Tony Robbins way, just stuff that's worth your time.

Like scrolling this website that shows how major cities around the world will feel different in the future, as the climate changes. Or listening to this enlightening podcast with author George Saunders, which has too many highlights to list. Or reading this digital magazine with its goal to make people more curious about their fellow humans and therefore more empathetic.
